Four better ways to spend your money
Money is always something you should be thinking about. How am I spending it? How am I gaining more income? How can I use the money I do have to help create the sort of life I want? These four tools will help you get on track to spending your money in a better way, tips on how to budget, and how to save.
Honey is a free app offered by Google Chrome. All you have to do is download and sign up. Now, I love online shopping. It’s one of those habits I’m trying to minimize in 2017. However, whenever I do break down and shop online (in Google Chrome) Honey shows up and shows out by alerting me of any coupons I might have missed. You may have heard of retail me not but Honey is even better because you don’t have to go to an external site to search and input all the coupon codes. Honey does it all for you!
All I did was go to the Macy’s site and already it has automatically applied certain deals and lets me know what else is on sale.
It’s literally that easy. It’s not a gimmick. It’s a real thing and it’s incredibly simple. Try it out and start saving your coins, girl!
If you really love online shopping like I do, Ebates is another great tool to use. It’s also free and by adding it your Google Chrome sidebar, it will pop up and notify you whenever you are on a site that allows cash back. So just like many credit cards have rewards programs, Ebates lets you see what deals are going on in select stores like Walmart, Macy’s, and Kohls, and when you are ready to buy something, you earn cash back to spend! There are even rewards for double cash back.
If you’re not much of an online shopper but you still want to use the cashback rewards in-store, there is an option for that as well.
What an easy way to get money back on things you were going to buy anyway, right?
If you haven’t heard about Mint yet then here it is. It’s the greatest app I have ever had in regards to staying on track in my finances and you can use it on your phone, tablet, and computer. I will likely do another post specifically on this app because there are a ton of different tools they provide recommendations on savings accounts, how to boost your credit score, alerts when bills are due and a great budgeting tool that helps you stay on our target financial goals.
I recently opened a new online savings account with the help of Mint.
I was also able to get a look at my credit score for free! There’s no reason to be afraid of what your score is even if it is bad. The best way to improve is to know what it is and what steps you can take to get it better.
As a college student with a lot of college loan debt and now credit card debt, I really need to learn how to get in charge of my finances. Building credit was a major key for me when I got my credit card but I ended up being irresponsible with it and now I have to hustle to pay it back down. Mint is definitely going to be one of my favorite apps to use in 2016.
4. Create a savings account today
I mentioned how I started a savings account with the help of Mint! But, what I didn’t mention is what kind of savings account. It’s called a high-yield savings account which means that you will gain more money back on interest. I had a savings account at my local bank but the interest rate was really low. Synchrony is an online bank (I think they may have some physical branches somewhere though) that I will be using to save my coins this year. I want to create multiple savings accounts, though. One for travel, one for a rainy day, and one that I absolutely will not touch. Of course, that’s a lot of pots to be dividing the money into including bills but I was told to PAY YOURSELF FIRST! That means, of course, pay all of your bills, but after that’s settled, put money in your savings account before you decide to go to the movies, or eat out, or buy someone a birthday gift. Hey, I know everyone likes to go out with their friends but can you really afford it? PAY YOURSELF FIRST! No matter what is going on you want to build up your savings.
I follow Curl Box Founder Myleik Teele on Twitter and she said something the other day that really made me think.
I let myself go down to 0 all of the time. I will literally use my last five dollars and be okay with that and that’s not a way to live at all. I don’t make a lot of money being a student in school, but I spend quite a bit. From this point on, I will be living absolutely like I am broke. As long as I have money in my savings account and my bills paid off every month, I will have to hustle if I want anything extra.
2017 is about getting on track of my finances this year. I want to work harder to get my career off the ground and in the process to be a more responsible adult who has bills to pay for the first time!
